With it's climate and soil qualities, Ramona is quickly becoming one of the fastest grape growing sites in California.  Over ninety local properties currently produce all types of grapes for winemaking.

The essence of the Spanish wine will be the focus of Hacienda de las Rosas winery.  Spanish wines are making a tremendous comeback across the country and we will feature red wines that invoke great traditions of Spanish wine-making.  The past few years have been busy with our creation of a first-class winery.  Our idea is to have a simple, but elegant winery with gardens and grapes throughout the property.  The property and grounds are now being prepared and irrigation systems installed.  Soon, grape vines will be selected and planted, with plans for innovative equipment installed for collection of the grapes and ultimate fermentation and processing.

Attending classes at U.C. Davis, one of the best schools in the country in regard to viticulture, we hope to have the latest technology and knowledge in the industry.  As members of the San Diego County Vintners Association, work has begun to market the San Diego County area as a wine lovers destination.

We dream of making that perfect Spanish wine, one that is unique and yet, has a broad appeal to our customers.  The idea is to be successful, both in the making of good wine and having a product that can be produced and sold in local markets for a profit.  Hacienda de las Rosas will be a name to be recognized within the wine industry in the future.

The grapes and the wine they produce are one of California's signature crops.  Many people may be unaware of the long history of this beverage in our State.  With the Spanish padres in the late 1700's came the art of wine making and viticulture through the chain of 21 missions along the California coast.

The first mission was founded on July 16, 1769 by Father Junipero Serra.  It was named San Diego de Alcala for the Saint Didacus Alcala.  This mission was only 6 miles from the present day city of San Diego and 20 miles from our winery in Ramona.

The grapes planted throughout the property are Spain's Tempranillo, the "Noble Grape".  Historical research informs us this grape varietal is believed to have been brought to Spain by pilgrims during the Crusades from their travels to the middle east between the years 1095 and 1291, and to be a variant of Pinot Noir.  The name derives from the Spanish word "Temprano", meaning "early" because the grape usually is harvested during late September.  This grape produces a wine of deep red color and full body.  Tempranillo responds to the delicate use of American and French oak, producing deep colored elegant wines capable of long aging, with sensuous notes of vanilla, cedar and soft spice.

In addition, the historical mission grapes, brought to California by the Spanish padres will also be planted.  This special root stock has been specially selected through UC Davis and will lend an authentic historical vineyard around the Spanish mission winery.
